A Little Magic Under the Stars

Some places have a way of making you feel at home the moment you return.

After months away, I was finally back at the Mareeba Drive In. My ute found its familiar spot, and somehow, so did I.

The movies were wonderful, but it was the people who made the night special. Familiar faces, new connections, and that lovely warmth you only find in places like this.

I wandered around, welcoming people, helping them find their way and quietly keeping an eye on things.

When I asked the team, “What else can I do to help?” their reply was simple.

“Just do what you’re doing.”

Those few words stayed with me.

Sometimes the smallest gestures mean the most. No title, no fanfare. Just being there, noticing the little things and making someone’s evening that little bit better.

And then there were the movies!

From my favourite perch along the café balcony, Brad Pitt had me on the edge of my seat. What a film! For the first time in a long, long while, I stayed awake right through to the end. Perhaps the popcorn helped!

Intermission brought that magnificent choc top, followed by Top Gun, an old classic and a wonderful trip back in time.

By then, I’d retired to my penthouse suite, my rooftop tent, where I could still enjoy the big screen from the comfort of my bed.

What a wonderful way to end an evening.

But the night had one more beautiful scene waiting.

When I woke in the early hours, the drive-in had fallen silent.

I lifted my eyes beyond the screen, towards the heavens, and there it was.

A magnificent blanket of stars stretching across the darkness. The trees stood in silhouette, and the world seemed wonderfully still.

Above me, the stars. Around me, silence. And somewhere beyond the horizon, the gentle promise of another day.

The Mareeba Drive In is so much more than somewhere to watch a movie. It’s a connection with people, a journey back in time, and a place where life’s simplest moments can become lasting memories.

To the wonderful team at the Mareeba Drive In, thank you for your warmth, your kindness and your hard work in keeping this beautiful piece of history and magic alive. ❤️
